Congestion is caused by mucus and swelling of the nasal passages that can make breathing really difficult. It certainly isn’t a painful situation and isn’t really serious unless you see blood in the mucus but definitely is really uncomfortable and can make sleeping difficult too. Nasal decongestion sprays work amazing but definitely have side effects especially if you use them frequently. Natural remedies work great, especially with mild respiratory problems. EUCALYPTUS STEAM – Eucalyptus steam can really penetrate and also reduce swelling in the nasal passages thereby reducing the congestion. All you need to do is add few drops eucalyptus essential oil to hot steaming water and inhale the vapor for good 10 minutes or until your nasal passages open up. Best done before bedtime.

NASAL IRRIGATION – If steam inhalation did not do much for you, you can try out nasal irrigation. It not only helps unclog the nasal passages but also has anti-inflammatory properties. Simply add 1 teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon baking soda to 1 cup lukewarm water and stir. Using a bulb syringe, squirt the solution into one nostril and tilt your head over a basin allowing the solution to drain from other nostril. Repeat with other nostril too.

ONION – Onions are a good way to clear your blocked nose.   The simplest way to get rid of a stuffy nose is to cut, peel and sniff the onion for five minutes and your nose will be cleared quickly.

GARLIC SYRUP – Helps in decongestion and also has great anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. Simply crush handful garlic and add it to 1 cup raw and organic honey. PEPPERMINT – Add a drop or 2 of peppermint essential oil to a humidifier to clear stuffy nose.

WARM COMPRESS – Soak a towel in a bowl of warm water and squeeze the excess water out of the towel.  Then place the towel over your nose and then your forehead. 

GINGER AND TURMERIC TEA – Ginger and turmeric are well-known anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and healing ingredients that go a long way in completely treating your congestion. To make ginger and turmeric tea, simply add 1 inch fresh ginger crushed and ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder to 1 cup hot water. Put a lid on it and let it infuse for 5 minutes. Sip on it slowly.
